Roof Patch 1 - A small hole

The weather was nice enough today to finally get some more holes patched in the roof. One of the holes was a penetration flange that was used for venting the bathtub and kitchen sink. The other hole was just a spot where the old roof had simply rusted through and split.

I started with the small hole. It was about 2” across after I cleaned it up. After brushing away all loose dirt and debris, I cut a patch several times larger than the hole. I use 26-gauge sheet steel for this type of repair. Galvanized steel would be best, but it’s difficult to find in my area. Next, I coated the entire area with rubberized roofing patch. I attached the patch with four neoprene-washer sheet metal screws and a series of 1/8” pop rivets. In this instance the pop rivets alone would have been enough, but I used the screws to hold the patch in place so it would not move around while I was trying to drill and install the rivets. Finally, I coated the entire patched area with more roof patch.
